Riografías: Women Healers of Alto Baudó is a photography exhibit and collaborative art project highlighting the resilience of women in the remote Alto Baudó region of Colombia, where they live under the constant threat of armed groups. Isolated by violence, many indigenous Embera and Afro-Colombian residents are confined to their homes, unable to safely access healthcare, education, or food. Through the project, these women began a process of healing their relationships with the land and their community.

Led by Colombian photographer Fernanda Pineda in partnership with intercultural mediators from Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), the project brought together local healers and midwives to create a powerful visual and symbolic act of healing. Using printed photographs of landscapes marked by violence, the women applied real medicinal plants, suturing the wounds of the land through a kind of visual ritual. Flowers and herbs replaced scars and damage, allowing the community to reimagine their connection to place and memory. This work was then exhibited as part of the Photoville Festival in New York, which features photography from around the world in public spaces across the city.

I joined the project as co-curator and graphic designer, working closely with Fernanda to help bring this story to life. My role involved designing the Photoville exhibit materials, assisting with photo selection, and supporting the logistics behind the scenes. Most importantly, I focused on ensuring that the visual presentation felt true to the spirit of the work and the voices of the women who made it. It was a deeply meaningful experience to be part of a project rooted in community care, collaboration, and traditional healing practices.
