On Foot Comic Book
Illustration, Editorial Design, Research
This project began with a critical shift in migration patterns across Mexico and Central America: the increasing number of people arriving from outside the region en route to the United States. These migrants, often traveling with families or as older adults, face one of the most dangerous migration routes in the world. The project set out to document their experiences, shedding light on why they are leaving their home countries, the risks they encounter, and the lack of support they face along the way. The goal was to tell these stories with care and nuance, while bringing attention to a growing crisis that remains largely invisible to many.
The work was a collaboration between Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF-USA) and a small creative team. It was built on direct interviews with migrants in Mexico City, field research at MSF’s mobile clinics, and insights from MSF’s medical and operational staff. The team gathered testimonies, data, and images to create a multimedia package that would live across MSF's platforms and international media. The final deliverables included a longform article, photographs, a comic or animated narrative, and a series of short-form videos and social media stories—designed to reach audiences in different formats and raise awareness about extracontinental migration and its many challenges.
As the multimedia graphic designer for MSF-USA, I led the creation of the comic, from field research to final illustrations. After visiting one of our mobile clinics in Mexico City, I interviewed several migrants, and from those conversations, I shaped a narrative that reflected their experiences as respectfully and truthfully as possible. It was important to me to protect their privacy while still honoring their stories. The subject matter felt personal—I come from an immigrant family, and my father had also crossed the U.S. border on foot. That connection shaped how I approached the work, both visually and emotionally. Along with the comic, I helped develop visual assets for social media and contributed to the overall storytelling strategy across platforms.
