Design Transforms Borders

Year

2022
Location

New York City, USA
Themes

Design Justice, Immigration/Displacement, Community Engagement

Summary

In collaboration with design specialists, we co-produced an interactive installation, workshops, and three expert panels for New York City Design Week. This project invited participants to join live studios of ceramic making, communal dinners, and debates promoting access, learning, and social justice with immigrant communities in Brooklyn.

My Role

As Touching Land’s Lead Designer, I was more hands-on with this project; I assisted with workshops and the exhibition's production logistics, along with certain design assets. I was especially interested in using design as a medium to explore the topic of borders, whether they exist in the world or our minds, and their impact on our communities.

Process

We start by sharing our thoughts using question booklets. Then, using ideas from those conversations, we'll work as a group to sketch and create a design, with MPP members there to help along the way. We'll screenprint the design together on the spot, and everyone will get to take home a print they helped make!
